Oracle Secures DB Data
By Dan Ragle
April 27, 2006
As the security administrator, your job is to make sure
that the information your business accumulates and/or generates
is secure; that it can only be seen by the people who actually
need to use it. Your customers expect you to protect their
personally sensitive information such as credit card numbers
and home phone numbers. Your financial department relies on you
to protect their forecast data and analysis. And if those
pressures aren't enough, various corporate regulations
require not only that your data be kept safe, but that
you can also prove your data is safe.
Oracle this week served up two new offerings targeted to the
safekeeping of your data--especially your data that happens
to be stored in an Oracle Database.
The first, Oracle Secure Backup, seeks to manage the storage of
data on tape and provides secure communications (via SSL) between
the client systems to be backed up and the tape servers themselves.
The product can back up both file system data (Linux, Windows,
and UNIX) and Oracle DB data (via integration with Recovery Manager).
For Oracle 10g Release 2 data in particular, Oracle Secure Backup
allows for the storage of RMAN encrypted data directly to tape; i.e.,
DB data is both transmitted from the database and stored on tape
in an encrypted format. In the first release, file system data is
encrypted while in transit but is not encrypted on tape.
Meanwhile, for the protection of live data within the Oracle DB
Oracle now offers Oracle Database Vault, an optional extension
specifically for Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 2.
Database Vault allows for the definition of data realms within the
DB and the creation of access rules that specify who can access
those realms and under exactly what circumstances (including time
of day, machine IP address, etc.). According to Oracle, with Oracle
Database Vault you can protect your sensitive data from even
privileged users such as the DBA and application owners.
Database protection not your thing? Have a look at the other key
entries in this week's collection of highlighted
