Securing Network Access and Behavior

Enterprise IT Toolkit

The Sentriant product line from Extreme Networks seeks to prevent non-compliant endpoints from getting on your network in the first place; and then, when they are allowed on, to prevent them from being able to distribute any potential nasties to other peer machines over the LAN.

The product's NAC capabilities are represented by the Sentriant Access Guard (AG) appliance, which received a boost this past week in that it now supports clustered and distributed appliance deployments such that a single master server can control and configure multiple enforcement servers, with failover support added to cluster configurations. Sentriant AG can scan a computer attempting to access the network in one of three possible ways: Agent-less (selected Windows OSs only), Agent-based (Windows and Mac OS X), and Web-based (via an Internet Explorer ActiveX control). Bad guys can be locked out of the network proper via both inline and indirect (DHCP proxy, 802.1x) methods. Review our Sentriant product briefing for further details on both of the current Sentriant product offerings.

Other noteworthy entries in this week's collection of highlighted Enterprise IT Planet Product Guide briefings include new 750 GB drive-equipped Isilon nodes, and a performance enhanced Security Knowledge Manager (SKM) from videoNEXT.

EIT Green Blog
Enterprise IT Planet.
Admittedly, our highlighted Online Resources have had a decidedly green tint to them over the past few months. But we couldn't resist this small amount of self-praise in regards to our very own environment-friendly, Enterprise IT Planet development.

If you haven't been there yet, take a few moments now to have a good look at our Enterprise IT Planet Green Blog, a regularly updated snapshot into the most recent green sightings and reports throughout the Tech universe. Championed by our own Pedro Hernandez, and driven by information culled from multiple sources, the Green Blog is a freshly updated look at the latest energy saving, carbon reducing, and pollution fighting developments across the IT industry (and then some); ranging from mainframe and desktop PC improvements to Linux and Vista tweaks. A collection of recent selections proves the scope:

AMD's Global Climate Protection Plan
HP Tackles Data Center Hot Spots
Rent-a-Green-PC (dig the frog)
Fujitsu's Slim, Green Tower Server

You can have a look at all the past entries by scrolling through them individually or a month at a time (check the navigation controls on the right side of each page). And new entries are added often; so be sure to stop in regularly to get the latest Green buzz. Finally, while you're there, don't hesitate to drop in your own two cents; as each article allows for the inclusion of your own user generated comments!
