Firefox Gnaws at IE
By Enterprise IT Planet Staff
December 14, 2004
WebSideStory said on Monday that Firefox usage in the U.S. jumped 34 percent in November, the month that marked the open source browser's journey out of beta to a 1.0 release. According to the Web analytics firm's findings, November's usage numbers represent a sizable increase over October's 13 percent bump, for a total share of 4.06 percent currently.
Since its November 9 launch, the browser quickly reached its 10 million-download goal. To date, SpreadFirefox.com reports that the browser has been fetched over 10.5 million times by Internet users.
Despite the browser's popularity surge, it still faces an uphill battle against Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE), which still dominates the U.S. Web browser landscape at just shy of 92 percent. A full-tilt browser war may still be a long way off.
WebSideStory analyst Geoff Johnston told InternetNews, "If the question is, 'are we heading down to a true browser war' where we're neck and neck at 50/50 [browser market share], I don't think that's ever going to happen again."
Finding a consensus among browser usage trackers, however, has proven tricky.
InternetNews also reports that On-Stat released figures showing IE dipping below the 90 percent mark while W3Schools.com gives Mozilla-based browsers (including Firefox) 21 percent share versus IE's 71 percent.
