Given today's complex network topographies, it's little wonder that network monitoring can become a challenge -- to speak nothing of configuring and maintaining a platform to keep an eye on it all. In this regard, Cittio is out to lend a hand. Today the makers of the WatchTower network management platform announced the availability of a new set of services, Cittio Managed Administration Services (CMAS). At its core, it is an effort to ease the administration and upkeep of WatchTower. Under this program, organizations, particularly regionally dispersed ones, Cittio takes the role of "monitoring the monitor," according to Brian James, vice president of marketing for Cittio. What results is a hybrid approach to network monitoring procurement. In contrast to typical software-as-a-service offerings, customers retain ownership of the WatchTower product. The only variable is which of the four service levels they use to supplement their implementation. Options include:
CMAS was launched, in part, as the company's reaction to the current state of the network monitoring. Although undoubtedly powerful tools, maintaining them could eclipse the problems they were trying to solve. It was a problem that became even more acute when multi-site environments came into the picture. And that left a bad taste in the mouths of those that paid a hefty price on monitoring. "Customers were not happy with the big four," says James, referring to BMC, CA, HP and IBM. Adding that they were at times stung by overly manual products that wound up "expanding the responsibility that IT has." Cittio's answer is CMAS, which is backed by administrators at the firm's network operations center and is manned 24x7. Patches and updates delivered remotely and users can resolve issues via a web-based ticket system. And as a sign of the diversity of network infrastructures CMAS can handle, the company named early customers including online advertising firm AdBrite, Mervyns Department Stores and financial concern T.
