Database administrators (DBAs) concerned about tenacious hackers now have a little more peace of mind, thanks to a unique approach taken by security software maker, Application Security.
Should a network attack circumvent firewalls or other security roadblocks, all is not lost. In such an instance, the only information gleaned from a database on a Microsoft SQL Server implementation outfitted with DbEncrypt would be gibberish.
DbEncrypt for Microsoft SQL Server is the latest in the software provider's line of application security products for distributed database, application and web server environments.
The software is able to encrypt data at the storage level, securing it in real-time as it appears in the columns. The product also provides MSDE (Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine) encryption, allowing developers to extend DbEncrpt's data protection to their desktop applications when using MSDE for custom enterprise-scale applications.
On the management front, the product includes a variety of features to help DBAs and application developers build their own encryption procedures. Enhanced access controls allow administrators to quickly grant or revoke access to protected data and create public private key pairs for a group.
A multiple login function helps organizations prevent disaster from lost login passwords. This allows shared access to a single encryption key for a data column, granting each login account an encrypted copy of the key based on each unique password. An optional password restoration function works only when a key needs to be restored. Network security policy makers can opt not to include that function in their installation.
In the event of an intrusion attempt, DbEncrypt's auditing features provide a thorough record of all transactions and procedures. This allows administrators to retrace any such attempts and modify their security measures as needed.
