Guardian Digital Security Suite Based on Open SourceBy John DesmondDecember 10, 2003
The Internet Productivity Suite includes gateway firewall protection, Web-based group collaboration, network intrusion detection, email management including junk mail and virus protection, proxy authentication and caching and virtual private networking functions. File and print functions and wireless connectivity protection can be added. Internet services features enable administrators to create unlimited Web domains and configure network services quickly. An auditing system provides real-time analysis of all Internet activities in a graphic format. Secure e-mail management includes integrated address books, Web-based group collaboration tools and Web mail, combined to form a secure office productivity system. Anti-virus protection is provided via Sophos. Network and host intrusion detection is provided via details intrusion analysis, along with attack severity ratings and updates of attack signatures in a timely manner. Software upgrades can be pushed out on a scheduled basis or pulled down by customers from the Guardian Digital Secure Network, a Web-based management system for accessing the firm's resources. As a software option, Internet Productivity Suite is priced at $1,895 for a 25-user license. The company charges per user for anti-virus, anti-spam and VPN protection. Customers choosing those options typically pay up to $3,200 for 25 users. Maintenance for software updates starts at $229/year. For a 25-user network, a basic Pentium III with 512MB RAM would be a sufficient platform. The appliance option starts at $3,800. Dave Wreski, who as an Internet security architect for UPS had an affinity for Linux and saw an opportunity, founded guardian Digital in 1999. "We saw it as a way to provide security solutions companies were looking for in a less expensive and more secure way," he says. The IPS packaging is aimed at small and medium-sized businesses. "By bundling together products previously offered separately, we can provide a package for small business at a price point more cost effective than purchasing them individually," he says. The company also offered EnGarde Secure Linux Community Edition as a free download, without the technical support and service options.
