Microsoft released a patch for the WMF flaw days before its scheduled date on Patch Tuesday. Details on the update are available in a Microsoft Security Bulletin (MS06-001) published today.
In the corresponding security advisory (912840), the company set a goal to have a fix ready by January 10th. However, the severity of the flaw, the existence of exploit code online and the popularity of a non-official patch seem to have sped things along.
The WMF flaw, rated critical by Microsoft, affects several versions of Windows. Already, security researchers have discovered spam that contains malicious WMF files (or pointers to them) along with toolkits that allow for their creation.
There are even reports of hacked sites serving up dangerous image files are pouring into tech discussion sites, including Slashdot and AntiOnline.
Microsoft is recommends that users "apply the update immediately."
Links to downloads for Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP1/SP2, XP Pro x64, and Server 2003/SP1/Itanium/Itanium SP1/x64 are available in the aforementioned bulletin. Alternately, users can visit Windows Update.
