A Different DLP: Reconnex Debuts Data Loss ProfilerBy Pedro HernandezFebruary 26, 2008
Can you have DLP without the "prevention" part? For on-the-fence organizations, Reconnex says yes you can. Data loss prevention (DLP) products are enjoying their moment in the sun. Whether it stems from ultra-competitive pressures between rivals or fears that regulatory bodies will drop the hammer on firms with shaky customer records practices, businesses seem increasingly open to the idea of technologies that curb the unauthorized outflow of sensitive data. Even so, not everyone is sold on the concept. That's why Mountain View, CA-based Reconnex today announced Data Loss Profiler, a 1U or 3U system that represents a spin-off of sorts from the company's full-blown DLP appliance, the iGuard. Faizel Lakhani, vice president of products and marketing for Reconnex, explains that there's a big bridge to cross for many IT departments before they even consider deploying a full DLP product. The first step for these apprehensive IT managers is to identify which data is worth protecting. Commonly, this data involves memos, design specs, marketing plans, blueprints and a myriad of document types that don't get flagged because they lack easy-to-spot identifiers such as 16-digit credit card numbers. Fundamentally, adds Lakhani, information security has evolved. The responsibility of security administrators has moved past "about all the things I know to protect." Rather, the challenge now is to identify the data "that as a security guy I know I have to protect, but don't." And before organizations go around diverting IT dollars for a DLP product, many would rather take stock first and start by tweaking their own security processes to suit their needs. Thusly, Data Loss Profiler fits the bill for those that "not ready for full-blown data loss prevention." Data Loss Profiler builds on the company's work on Reconnex 7.0, the software that powers the iGuard appliance. In this case, the unit leverages the indexing, "learning" and search components behind its Content Analytics Engine. By building a product around these aspects, they developed hardware that automatically indexes every bit of data as it leaves the network. Administrators, in turn, can pull up the device's search-engine-like interface and run queries to test the effectiveness of their current security policies or DLP implementation based on historical data gathered by unit. Likewise, they can use these queries to determine if sensitive information is making its way past the perimeter, regardless of which vector was employed (e-mail, IM, USB keys, etc.), and tailor their processes to match. A 1U rack mount system can store roughly 30 to 45 days worth of an index. And if Data Loss Profiler sells customers on the virtues of DLP technology, they can easily upgrade their hardware to an iGuard system by paying for a license key and unlocking the functionality. Although it's an easy up-sell opportunity for Reconnex, upgraders benefit by getting a credit of their original purchase price to go toward their iGuard purchase. Reconnex Data Loss Profiler is available now for a starting price of $19,995. A seven-day free trial is available.
