SAN to IP Servers: Join the PartyBy Dan RagleMarch 9, 2006
![]() Don't let your server's lack of Fibre Channel connectivity keep it from tapping your SAN resources. That's the mantra from Brocade this week, who unveiled their Brocade iSCSI Gateway allowing you to connect your existing IP-based servers to your SAN resources (FC switches and/or directly to disk arrays) via iSCSI. The Gateway sports both dual FC (for the SAN/arrays) and 10/100/1000 ports (for the IP servers), can accommodate up to 100 simultaneous iSCSI sessions, and delivers data at a clip of up to 135 MB/sec. The box can sit on a desktop or be loaded into the rack; its 1U half-width design allows you to pack two of 'em side-by-side in a single rack mount, where they can be configured as an active/active pair complete with failover and failback. And if you run a GroupWise shop and you're tired of having to jump through hoops just to restore a single message or mailbox for your users, be sure to take a look at GWAVA's new offering, Reload. Reload runs on a separate Linux server but can backup GroupWise Post Offices from any other platform (without requiring an agent to be loaded on the Post Office platform) and provides its own Post Office agent (i.e., a user can connect to the Post Office exposed by the Reload server) for simplified message retrievals. The amount of information readily available on the Reload server depends entirely on the size of its disk or accessible storage; GWAVA says about 5 times the size of your existing Post Offices in storage will get you a couple weeks worth of disk-based restores (and if you attach a tape backup to the Reload server, Reload can rotate the older data off to tape, too). Other highlighted entries from this week's collection of Enterprise IT Planet Product Guide briefings include new Celerra offerings from EMC; extended agent support for the Elemental Security Platform; and a PCI Express flavored PathScale InfiniPath for interconnecting clustered, Intel-based Linux boxes via InfiniBand.
