Storage Networking 2, Configuration and Planning
Sponsored by HP
In Part 1, we discussed storage area networks (SANs) and fibre channel. In Part 2, delve into best practices and cover the general concepts you must know before configuring SAN-attached storage. The most critical, sometimes tedious, part of setting up a SAN is configuring each individual disk array. This guide examines configurations for SAN-attached servers and disk arrays, and also includes a look at the future of IP storage.

New to SGI's InfiniteStorage product line is the NEXIS NAS
gear, served up in multiple configurations with entries for
entry to Enterprise-level deployments. Based on the vendor's
XFS File System, the new appliances replace the vendor's previous
NAS 2000/3000 offerings (though the SAN 2000/3000 is still
available as of this writing).
NEXIS is offered in multiple configurations, including entry
level and gateway-only deployment models. Disk drive support ranges
from 5 to 448 drives (depending on model, of course), with the
high-end 7000 model also supporting standard and HA flavors. All
the NEXIS offerings feature the inclusion of the vendor's integrated
InfiniteStorage Appliance Manager, a management GUI that the vendor
says can be used to optimize storage resources, manage growth, and
setup a base NAS configuration in less than 20 minutes. Have a look
at our newly updated product briefing for more details on these and
the rest of the InfiniteStorage line.

MAAWG Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group.
Individuals tend to see message abuse as singular events. For example:
"My E-mailbox is being overrun with spam."
"Someone just sent 10 bazillion messages around the
world--all claiming to enlarge certain parts of the
human anatomy--and all with my return E-mail address."
"An E-mail virus just blew up my lawn mower."
But the members of MAAWG (the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group), while
readily acknowledging these individual events as catastrophes in their
own right, are tasked to see a bigger picture. For example, rather than
focusing on just one type of abuse (such as spam), the group also takes
into consideration practices such as Denial of Service attacks using
messaging as the medium. And rather than focus on only one type of messaging
(such as E-mail), the group also considers how messaging abuse can be
managed or limited through emerging messaging forms, such as SMS, MMS,
or PAP. Finally, rather than focusing on only one area of the world,
MAAWG seeks to be global in nature, focusing on the transmission of
messages to and from any world destination.
And to what end? MAAWG uses a three-pronged approach in an attempt to
at least address--if not rectify, through the recommendations of best
practices and technologies--the world's messaging evils. Those three
prongs are represented by three working committees within the organization:
the Collaboration, Technical and Public Policy committees. Additional
sub-committees include Anti-Phishing, Zombie/Botnets and Senders Best
Practices and Initiatives. Members of these committees "... work together
to develop collaborative initiatives to fight spam and other forms of
messaging abuse, including developing best practices for stopping abuse."
Additionally, the membership evaluates technical initiatives for stopping
abuse and share information regarding new technologies.
Among the publications available through the Web site are the
MAAWG Sender Best Communications Practices,
Anti-Phishing Best Practices for ISPs and Mailbox Providers,
and the Managing Port 25 document. New from the group is
the MAAWG Best Practices for the Use of a Walled Garden, a treatise primarily
for ISPs on the use of automatic redirection of bot or zombie infected
subscribers to a safe--and more importantly closed--environment where the
subscriber can cleanse their computers.
MAAWG membership is offered at "Supporter," "Full Member," and "Sponsor"
levels (each with their own price tag and their own set of rights and privileges),
with recognizable Sponsors currently including AOL, Earthlink, Google, Microsoft,
and Yahoo!, among others.
