SAS Reaches 6Gbps MilestoneBy Enterprise IT Planet StaffMay 6, 2008
Dell, LSI and Seagate today announced a milestone that the companies hope will broaden Serial Attached SCSI's appeal in the realm of enterprise-class storage. According to the companies, their setup is the first to reliably reach the 6 Gbps mark in end-to-end I/O throughput and RAID tests. The test bed consisted of a Dell server running Windows and outfitted with LSI SAS2108 PCI Express SAS RAID-On-Chip card and SAS2x36 6Gb/s SAS expander. Seagate provided SAS drives rated at 6 Gbps and 3 Gbps, as well as 3 Gbps SATA models. Dell's senior manager of storage product management, Howard Shoobe, discusses the coordination required to make "this next generation of SAS" a success in late 2009. "To help accelerate the maturity of 6Gb/s SAS and deliver the enhanced functionality customers need, it is critical for us to work closely with our silicon and hard disk drive partners in early interoperability and validation testing," he states in a company release. LSI is also showcasing the new features that help boost reliability on 6Gbps SAS data links, which include Spread Spectrum Clocking, Decision Feedback Equalization, standardized zoning and self-configuring expanders. LSI's demonstration of 6 Gbps SAS happens before the SCSI Trade Association SAS Solutions Open House, taking place today in San Jose, CA.
