Cittio Upgrades WatchTowerBy Pedro HernandezApril 20, 2005
Developed for mid-sized to large networks in mind, WatchTower 2.4 relies on Simple Network Monitoring Protocol (SNMP) to poll the overall health of a corporate network and the devices therein. The web-based client is compatible with popular browsers, namely Internet Explorer 5.0, Firefox 1.0, and Netscape Navigator 5.0 (and above in each case). WatchTower Server, preferably a stand-alone installation, runs on Red Hat Linux 9.x systems. New to this version are user interface enhancements, which include improved user authentication and audible alarms, as well as features that allow administrators to dive into the details of their infrastructure's effectiveness at shuttling data between nodes. One new key feature in that regard is the latency monitoring capability. This option allows administrators to chart response times for each device and its services in real-time. The upgrade also introduces a new session monitor for Windows servers that relays traffic for any port or NIC. Also new is a configurable polling engine that makes it possible to set differing levels of polling sensitivity for varying classes of hardware. For instance, administrators can select a polling configuration with a lighter touch for older equipment, an option that avoids "one-size-fits-all polling configurations", according to the company. These are all bolstered by tweaks to the utility's SNMP data collection capabilities, allowing it to collect information on more variables without added hardware overhead. Lastly, Cittio (formerly JJ Labs) has enhanced WatchTower's reporting capabilities with three new report types: IP address, asset and notification reports. WatchTower 2.4 becomes available in May 2005. Pricing information is available by contacting Cittio.
