Hello everyone

Let me introduce myself. My name is Michael and ... I'm happy to be here. My strange handle, ua549, was assigned to me when doing "special" networking jobs in Germany during the 1980's. The label stuck like glue. I answer to ua, Michael or hey you.

I've been in IT, networking and finance my entire life. Most recently I did a lot of international networking and security consulting for medium sized governments and large banks. I retired in 1998 (I'm in my early 60's).

Currently I mod at other Jupiter forums: Sharky's, Server Watch and Datamation. I also do some volunteer alpha/beta testing for Microsoft and Diskeeper Corporation. I like to help wherever I have the ability and there is a need.

I have a computing lab at home running Win2k3, Exchange, web and ftp servers. My web server has not been updated for awhile but you are welcome to browse there. BTW - Kitzy is my wife's nickname.

If you are interested in performance measurement, I also run MRTG and pipe it to the website here. The page will timeout after ~5 minutes.

I hope I didn't bore you with too much verbage.

Once again, I'm happy to be here.

Good Sir,

Glad to have you aboard! Make yourself at home.

I, too, will be partaking of the Jupitermedia picnic. I'd PM you a beer, but it's a *dry* gathering Cola, perhaps?

Later,
Pedro

Heya Mike, glad to have you aboard, and thanks for the introduction. I'm the executive editor for the Windows Technology and the Developer Channels (along with a bunch of other sites including EIT, DBJ, AntiOnline and PHPBuilder), so you'll see me around on many forums.

I look forward to getting to know you. I reside in Florida, so unfortunately I won't be making the pic-a-nic, aye boo-boo.

ua549? Sounds like a movie about a submarine pretending to be a German U-Boat

I know I already welcomed you in another post about a week ago but since this is the official "Welcome you to the neighborhood" thread, I'll go ahead and do it again.

Welcome Michael! Great name you have there. I'm really happy to have you here. We also have techd1 and wobbli to help out however wobbli is starting a new job at the moment and wont have as much time for a while so the timing for your arrival is perfect.

The forums don’t seem to have much of the "community" feeling as I would like as most folks pop-in, ask a question, get an answer then go away. Maybe if we had a "Lounge" forum or something to that effect that folks could just hang out in, chat about whatever and make some friends, then it would help to build the sense of community, but every time they can just come and get answers then that helps so thanks and I'm looking forward to working with you.
Mike

It takes a lot of work to build a community spirit. A lounge works, but also take a bit more modding. I'll leave those decisions to the higher ups such as JP.

I'm glad to be here since I have the time and experience.

As for my handle, it is better than Bond.

I've added lounges to a few forums and it has helped, but only after there's at least some kind of steady posters. Some group of frequent visitors, otherwise it just sits there.
